She cares for her mother, is proud of her niece, Jane Fairfax, and has unstinting admiration toward Emma. Emma has limited patience for Miss Bates, and one careless insult nearly ruins even Miss Bates's unwavering affection, and causes a rift between Emma and Mr. Knightley.
